138-Year Old Building in Mansfield Center Starts New Chapter

November 12, 2024 – Following extensive renovations, an historic building in the heart of Mansfield is seeing new life and a positive future. Built in 1886, the building at 534 Storrs Road, colloquially known as the “Mansfield General Store,” has received extensive renovations and a complete makeover thanks to new owner Andre Bennatan.

A Mansfield resident, Mr. Bennatan chose to invest in the property given its importance to the community. “This landmark is cherished by so many in our area but was in dire need of rehabilitation,” said Mr. Bennatan. “Along with our contractor Mark Soucy, we have spared no effort to preserve and restore this iconic building. We hope it will help revitalize Mansfield Center and contribute to the beautification of our town.”

The 138-year old building spent much of its life as a general store, beginning with the original builder and owner Charles W. Weeks and continuing through 1997, when then-owner Ann Robb retired after running the store for forty years. Starting in the early 2000s, the building housed a variety of retail uses until the need for repairs prompted the sale of the building in 2023.

Mark Soucy of KBMS Enterprises oversaw the renovations, which have breathed new life into the storied building. The work included new windows, complete interior refresh, paving the parking area, and cleaning up the landscaping.

The lower floor of the building will welcome Kiwami Triathlon and Wetsuits’ offices. It will also be the home of Line Art Studio, where studio owner Jennifer Jeffreys will teach art classes for adults.

On the ground floor, Lisa’s Chocolates and Gifts recently began welcoming customers. The retail space features handmade chocolates and candies as well as antiques and crafts.

Above, two apartments are now available to lease. Each apartment features two bedrooms and one bathroom.

“After 11 months of continuous labor,” Mr. Bennatan said “the General Store is back to life and ready to welcome you.”

Mansfield Town Manager Ryan Aylesworth said the community has been eagerly watching the progress of the renovations.

“The reopening of the Mansfield Center General Store is a moment of pride for our town, representing both a revival of our history and a vital step forward for local economic development,” said Mr. Aylesworth. “This beautifully restored building isn’t just a nod to our past; it’s a cornerstone for future growth in Mansfield Center, enhancing our village center as a destination for both residents and visitors. By preserving this historic resource, we’re honoring Mansfield’s heritage while promoting a thriving, walkable center that supports our local businesses. We look forward to seeing the positive impact the store’s reopening will have on the vibrancy of our community and the sense of connection it fosters.”

The community will celebrate the completion of the restorations with a ribbon-cutting ceremony on Wednesday, November 13, 2024 at 11:00 AM. The public is invited to attend.
